Judge Lori Landry has resigned from the 16th Judicial District Court.

The Secretary of State's Office confirmed with KATC on Saturday that they received a resignation letter from Landry dated July 16. Landry states that her resignation would be effective on July 21, with her last day in office being July 20.

A public database maintained by the Secretary of State that lists all elected public officials shows the 16th Judicial Court Division H, Landry's court, as vacant. It lists Landry as the last judge to preside in the division, having first been elected to the position in 2002.

According to the Secretary of State's Office, because less than 12 months remained in Landry's term, a special election is not required. Landry's term was set to expire this December, with qualifying for that election set to take place this week, from July 22-24.

Last year, Landry had nearly 500 motions to recuse her that were filed by the district attorney’s office, which accused her of threatening behavior toward prosecutors and of having a bias in court against the district attorney’s office.

The district attorney's office also claimed that Landry repeatedly criticized its prosecutors for allegedly mistreating African-American defendants.

The 16th Judicial District Attorney's Office ultimately agreed to dismiss the motions to recuse Landry, in a four-day trial at the Iberia Parish Courthouse.
