A fundraiser was held Saturday for a New Iberia mother whose son and stepson were shot and killed in June.
Damarcus Brown, Jr., 13, and Tre'gon Norman, 18, were killed during a shooting on Rogers St. in New Iberia. Their mother, Shaquita Perro, asked for anyone with information to come forward and called for justice for the teens.
Four and a half months after the shooting, the New Iberia community is coming together to support the boys' family. After Perro's home was recently vandalized, the organizers of an event meant to showcase breast cancer survivors decided to use the event as a way to help the family. They say that helping out in this instance is "so important."
"We are our brother's keeper," said organizer of the event and co-founder of We Push. "I think it's our responsibility to help each other when we need the help."
Perro said the support was "very overwhelming. I tried not to cry, but it's very overwhelming."
We Pushheld the event until 5 p.m. at the West St. Mary Civic Center in Jeanerette.
