A group is calling for the removal of an Erath priest over "homophobic and racially insensitive"comments.

On Thursday afternoon, members of several groups gathered at the Diocese of Lafayette as a petition was delivered in protest for the removal of Fr. Andre Metrejean from parish ministry in Erath.

Metrejean, a priest at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church posted to the church's Facebook page in June commenting on the New Orleans Saints and their support of Pride Month.

"Come on NOLA Saints. We want to support you. But this kinda of stunt hurts society and souls. Don't bow down to these pressure groups. Kids have rights. Children deserve to have a dad and a mom. Plz dont support immorality. Cancel the PC Culture," the post states.

The Diocese of Lafayette responded with a statement on that post. You can read it here.

The group also claims that Metrejean told a parishioner that the church does not require masks for COVID-19 because, "this is not really something we need to worry about, since the virus only affects black people."

On Thursday, the group critical of Fr. Metrejean was met by supporters of Fr. Metrejean who held up signs and prayed as the petition was delivered to the diocese.

The petition, according to the group critical of Metrejean, received 12,000 signatures.
