An emotional night for a Lafayette family, forever changed by a tragedy.

It was one year ago today when Matthew Carter, a Comeaux High School senior, died.

Days earlier, Carter was the victim of an armed robbery attempt. He was found inside his car suffering from a gunshot wound. He was 17 years old.

Matthew's family and friends continue to grieve his death and even one year later there's still unanswered questions surrounding the teen's death.

Dozens gathered around his grave Friday, marking one year since his death during a candlelight vigil. He was remembered as a brother, son, and teammate.

"The immense loss that we've all felt this past year is very evident and right now is a time that we need to lean on each other," said Matthew's sister, Nicole Carter.

During the candlelight vigil, each person held a candle to remember Carter while sharing their memories.

"Matthew had a gift for opening up and touching someone's heart. You're all here tonight because Matthew touched your heart in some way. He truly made us all better,” said Matthew's dad, Jerry Carter.

"He was the guy that most people could go to if you ever need help with anything," added Max Smith, a friend of Matthew's. "That's kind of why I loved being his friend. If no one else was able to be there for you, he definitely was."

Carter was then honored on the soccer field, where each of his teammates paid tribute by kicking the soccer ball to each other then presenting his family with flowers.

"His heart was made of gold, his soul was full of compassion. We really hope to continue that legacy and when you hear Matthew's name, you think of sunshine because that's what he was for us," Nicole Carter added.

The family will have a blood drive at Pizza Artista in Broussard on February 13th.
