LAFAYETTE, La — Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory announced he is eliminating the Deputy Chief's position within the police department.

In 2016, then Mayor-President Joel Robideaux's administration created the position of "Deputy Chief" for Reggie Thomas because he lacked a bachelor's degree, which made him ineligible to be police chief. Toby Aguillard was instead appointed to the police chief position.

Current Mayor-President Josh Guillory spoke about the Deputy Chief's position this morning during his weekly radio show "Lafayette Live" on KPEL.

"This is a position that we do not need. We can do the mission with out and save the tax payers money and achieve the same results. That's what I'm going to do," said Guillory. "My position on that with doing more with less is not unique to the police department. I'm doing that across the board."

As far as the police chief position, Guillory said that the process is moving forward in the search for a new chief after Aguillard resigned at Guillory's request.
