State leaders are urging residents to complete the United States Census if they haven't already done so.

Louisiana is 45th in the nation in census response, and officials want to improve that number.

The census has an impact on federal funds that come to Acadiana.

"It helps us determine our share of federal dollars for our hospitals, our communities, for disaster recovery - something that's close and near and dear after Laura passed through this area - for our schools, for our roads, for our departments," explained Sen. Gerald Boudreaux of Lafayette. "It also helps determine our congressional representatives and emergency services and so many more."

Residents can fill out the census at census.gov or by calling 844-330-2020 before October 31.
