The deadline to register for Operation Blue Roof has been extended.

"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers #BlueRoof program sign-up deadline is extended through October 15, 2021 for residents who sustained Hurricane #Ida damage in the 25 eligible parishes in southeastern Louisiana," a post states.

Until today, the deadline was September 30 - which is tomorrow.

Officials tell KATC, they have crews working in more than 17 different parishes. They are installing 1,000 blue roofs a day.

"Right now we're seeing the effect of it, with the rain coming here. It gives you a bit of relief, knowing the blue roof is here, and water isn't going to seep through your house" Martin Dickerson, of Houma, said.

Martin Dickerson says one week after the hurricane, he came home to find a hole in his roof and water damage inside. Immediately he applied to get a blue roof from the Army Corps of Engineers. Two weeks later he was surprised to find a crew at his house.

"While we came over here, they were putting the blue roof on it, that was a good site" Dickerson said.

"We actually surpassed putting on 10,000 roofs, it's amazing to do that, but there is more to follow" OIC Major Chatom "CT" Warren, from New Orleans South, said.

Warren says crews are working as quickly as possible to help out more than 40,000 applicants.

"We have three contractors that are working above schedule, 17 different parishes we're executing in. You can't be mad at how this process is going" Warren said.

The spokesperson says, if you already installed your own tarp, still apply for one of theirs, crews will re-do the work, making it more sustainable.

"This is going to be our first line of defense until we can get our roof back" Dickerson said.

Warren also said, everyone who applies, will be getting a blue roof, unless 50 % or more of the roof is damaged. Unfortunately, it then becomes unsafe for the crew.
