The New Orleans Police Department is investigating one of its own officers, accused of shooting and killing a veteran's service dog.
The department originally released a statement saying the dog bit the owner before the officer shot it near the Fair Grounds last week.
The owner, Clayton Crawford, argues the dog never bit the officer, according to a report from nola.com.
NOPD has backtracked their statement, saying it was premature.
The officer who shot the dog never told investigators he was bitten, said the NOPD. Clayton's dog helped him with PTSD.
The department said the investigation is being handled by the Public Integrity Bureau's Force Investigation Team.
Crawford is waiting to bury his dog until police return it and is waiting to hear back from the NOPD.
