COUSHATTA, La. (AP) - Louisiana fire authorities are investigating after a woman and her 7-year-old son died in a late night apartment fire.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal's office said it happened Wednesday night in Coushatta. Firefighters initially responded to the call about 10 p.m. The bodies of the two victims were later discovered.
The fire marshal's office said the fire occurred in an old commercial bank building that had been converted into apartments. The victims were found in a downstairs unit.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Spokeswoman Ashley Rodrigue said investigators believe a heating device placed too close to combustible objects could be a contributing factor.
Rodrigue said investigators also were unable to locate working smoke alarms in the home.
