A longtime employee of the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal and Acadiana native has died, the SFM announced Saturday.

45-year-old Lt. Christopher Burleigh passed away overnight on Friday following a lengthy illness.

According to the SFM, Lt. Burleigh spent a total of 14 years with the agency, first as a supervisor in the Acadiana area, where he was from, and later as an integral part of the training and education division. He developed and hosted classes for SFM deputies, staff, and outside first responder agencies and individuals with the life safety and property industry.

Lt. Burleigh also was involved in Operation Save-A-Life, a program dedicated to installing free smoke alarms across Louisiana. The SFM said he "took pride" in the effort.

"Chris' dedication to the SFM, and the public it serves, as well as his flair for life, will be greatly missed," reads a post by the office on Facebook. "Please join us in holding Chris and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers."
