MONROE, La. — The Louisiana Association of Affordable Housing Providers announced on Thursday that it is encouraging Louisiana rental property owners to work with tenants who have been impacted by COVID-19.

According to a release from LAAHP, its members represent a portion of the rental property in the state.

“Apartment communities in Louisiana have not been immune from the effects of the coronavirus," said Meghan Elder, LAAHP executive director in a statement. "During this difficult and uncertain time, LAAHP asks that rental property owners look for creative and compassionate solutions to work with tenants whose jobs and income have been interrupted.”

LAAHP says the economic consequences of the COVID-19 response have been severe, with many workers being laid off or facing reduced income. LAAHP says that it believes that communication between landlords and tenants is critical during this uncertain time.

Tenants should likewise be upfront with their landlords about problems they foresee making full rent payments on time as a result of changes in their employment situation as a result of the coronavirus, the release states.

While the governor’s order currently puts a hold on evictions, tenants still have an obligation to pay rent, says LAAHP. Paying rent on time and in full helps rental property owners meet their own financial obligations, they add.
