Initial unemployment insurance claims drop for week ending January 9

BATON ROUGE – The initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending January 9, 2021 dropped to 20,497 from the week ending January 2, 2021 total of 25,365. For a comparison, during the week ending January 11, 2020, 2,521 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 15,509 from the previous week’s average of 12,707. The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending January 9, 2021 increased to 85,773 from the week ending January 2, 2021 total of 64,404. The continued claims were above the comparable figure of 15,957 for the week ending January 11, 2020. The four-week moving average of continued claims increased to 68,817 from the previous week’s average of 64,076.
