Hall of fame jockey Randy "Ragin' Cajun" Romero has died at the age of 61, according to The Advocate.

He was born in Erath in 1957.

Romero died late Wednesday. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and entered hospice care earlier this year.

He began his riding career in 1975 at Evangeline Downs and ended his career there as well. Romero had 4,285 career wins to his name.

He spoke openly about his health issues. In one interview, he said he lost count of all the injuries he had sustained while on horseback. Romero retired from riding in 1999.

Funeral arrangements are pending. A funeral Mass is expected to be held in September at Our Lady of Lourdes church in Erath.
