Slidell Police are investigating what Chief Randy Fandal calls a "disturbing" incident in which an 80-year-old man was shot while out on a morning walk.

Early Friday morning, the man was walking along a sidewalk, part of his morning exercise routine, when he noticed a white sedan drive by him slowly. He told police he saw the vehicle turn around, and shortly after felt a sharp pain in his back. The same car appeared again and then sped off. The man then realized he was shot and called police, according to a post on the Slidell Police Department's Facebook page.

The victim went to a local hospital where staff discovered the projectile from the weapon was still lodged in his back. Police believe the weapon was a pellet gun. The man is expected to make a full recovery.

Chief Fandal said he is outraged by the incident and wants justice to be served.

"The person(s) who did this are cowards and intentionally targeted this elderly man for no apparent reason. I admire the fact that this 80-year-old gets out of bed every day to enjoy his morning walk. For this to happen to him, absolutely infuriates me. No rock will be left unturned, and we will find the person(s) responsible for this."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Slidell Police.
