Louisiana voters will have the chance to vote in a different kind of president next month - a Pet President.
The Humane Society of Louisiana (HSLA) is coordinating the race, which currently involves 7 candidates - a hedgehog, an opossum, a cat, three dogs, and a horse.
The election is a fund-raising campaign. Each pet hopes to garner the most votes and be declared Pet President. Votes are $1.00 each, with a minimum voting block of $5.00. The candidate with the most votes by noon on November 3rd will be declared the winner.
HSLA has created a Facebook page called Pets for President that provides photos of each candidate, their platforms, and a running total of votes they've received. To date, Frankie the Opossum has a commanding lead with 632 votes. Mr. Tigglesworth the hedgehog is currently in second place.
The funds raised from this campaign will support the operations of the Humane Society's three animal care facilities, which are home to more than 100 formerly abused or orphaned animals.
"We are delighted that so many people have participated in this fun campaign, and we have already raised more than $2,000 although our goal is to raise $5,000 before noon, November 3rd. We are hopeful that more people will vote for their favorite candidate and share our posts with their family and friends," says Jeff Dorson, HSL Director.
Again, the deadline to vote for Pet President is November 3rd at noon.
