An 87-year-old man died Saturday afternoon when the power chair he was riding on the highway was struck by a vehicle.

Levery Fonseca of Thibodaux was riding his power chair on St. Patrick Highway in the city limits of Thibodaux, Chief Bryan Zeringue said.

Fonseca was riding the chair near the edge of the roadway, the chief said. At the same time, an 83-year-old man, also of Thibodaux, was traveling in a GMC Terrain, the chief said.

The GMC rear-ended the power chair, ejecting Fonseca. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office, the chief said.

Impairment on Fonseca is unknown at this time, but a toxicology sample will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The man driving the GMC wasn’t injured, and impairment is not suspected, the chief said. The accident happened at about 3 p.m.

No charges have been filed at this time. This crash remains under investigation.
