Ca C'est Bon: Syrup Cake

LAFAYETTE, LA — This morning Abby Breidenbach was live at Vermilionville in the kitchen with Chef Mandi making a Syrup Cake or Gâteau de Sirop. Follow along with the videos or you can use the recipe below to bake your own!

The first step is, of course, to gather your ingredients. Chef Mandi says that a must for this cake is using what any Cajun grandmother would, Steen's Cane Syrup.

Ca C'est Bon: Syrup Cake (pt 1)

From our wet ingredients, we move on to incorporating the dry. That includes the sifted flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Ca C'est Bon: Syrup Cake (pt 2)

Ingredients:

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cups Steen's Pure Cane Syrup
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 cup hot water

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour (or coat well with cooking spray) a 9-inch square pan, a 13 x 9 inch pan, or muffin pan.

Combine oil, syrup and beaten egg. Stir until well blended. Mix and resift dry ingredients except soda. Add dry ingredients to the oil, syrup ad egg mixture alternately with the hot waterin which the sosa has been dissolved. Begin and end with the flour mixture.

Pour into prepared pan. Bake 15-20 minutes.
