FORKED ISLAND, La. – In Louisiana, sometimes traffic stops for wildlife. That’s what happened on Tuesday afternoon in front of Forked Island / E Broussard Elementary in Forked Island.

School bus driver Nell Romero shared video on social media of her bus and other drivers patiently waiting as an alligator crossed the roadway.

Romero says the reptile stopped traffic as the bus was exiting the school and heading onto its afternoon route.

Students can be heard in the video sharing their excitement over seeing the gator. Looking out for the gator’s well-being, one child exclaims, “Oh, no! Don’t run it over!”

The gator appears to have made it safely to the other side. In the video, it drops into the shallow water of a ditch in front of the school.
