Police chief asks Abbeville council to consider raises for officers

Abbeville’s chief of police is asking for raises for police officers.

Chief Bill Spearman asked the council to call a special meeting to discuss the increases.

Spearman brought his concerns before the council Tuesday saying that officers are leaving for higher-paying jobs. The chief says that the need for the raise is greater because of the dangerous work officers do every day.

“It’s a need. It’s a genuine need,” Spearman said. “These guys go out there every day, put their lives on the line. In recent months, we’ve had four officers that jumped into a canal and saved two people without even thinking about what it was. And it was 47 degrees out that day.”

The meeting will take place Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
