Abbeville Council to discuss golf course today

The Abbeville City Council meets in regular session today, and discussion of the golf course is on the agenda.

For some weeks now, council members have been exploring and discussing the possibility of leasing the Vermilion Oaks Country Club Golf Course, which closed last year.

The golf course has been on the market since it closed, but hasn’t sold. The committee appointed to research the issue learned that the club operated at a loss from 2012 until it closed last fall, posting a loss of nearly $500,000. If the city leased the facility, it would operate it only as a golf course, not a country club.

The items on today’s meeting agenda include citizen Kenneth Nutt, who wants to discuss his concerns about the city taking over operations of the golf course, as well as an update from the Golf Course Advisory Committee, presented by Councilman Francis Touchet Jr.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Meeting Room, 101 North State Street in Abbeville.
