A St. Mary Parish deputy has been arrested and accused of battery on an inmate.

The Sheriff’s Office says that former deputy Deboni Rollins, 30, of Franklin was arrested on Monday following an investigation into the alleged incident.

Rollins turned herself into the sheriff’s office upon notification that an active warrant was out for her arrest, according to a release.

Sheriff Blaise Smith says that the battery incident occurred on April 16 at the St. Mary Law Enforcement Center. Rollins’ employment with the sheriff’s office was terminated following the completion of the investigation.

Rollins told KATC this morning that she slapped the inmate once with an open hand – after the inmate threatened her repeatedly, scratched her. The woman was being booked on a charge of domestic abuse, she said. Rollins also said she believes there is videotape of the entire incident.

Rollins was booked on a charge of simple battery.

A photo of Rollins was not provided.
