Chief: Charge upgraded after Opelousas shooting victim dies

The victim of a shooting last week in Opelousas has died and charges against the suspect have now been upgraded, according to Police Chief Martin McLendon.

The police chief tells KATC that the victim, whose identity has not yet been released, died Wednesday June 19. He was shot outside of a home on Cherokee Street last Wednesday June 12.

A suspect John Leblanc was arrested in connection with the shooting after he turned himself in to police on Thursday.

His charges will be upgraded to second-degree murder.

At the time of his arrest, Leblanc was charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder. According to police Leblanc fired at several people following an argument at a nearby motel.
