According to St. Landry Parish Crime Stoppers, 37-year-old Kurt Thomas of Opelousas was arrested on Friday, April 26 after an investigation into the stolen donations. The theft was reported on Saturday, April 20.

The sheriff’s department says the store clerk noticed the jar missing from the front counter upon returning to work. Cameras at the casino allegedly captured a suspect, now identified as Thomas, placing the donation jar under his shirt and walking towards the restroom. The empty donation jar was found by detectives in the trashcan of the men’s restroom.

The sheriff’s office says that a tip submitted through the department’s P3 app allegedly identified Thomas as a suspect. The tip was forwarded to the sheriff’s office and an arrest was made following the investigation.

Thomas was arrested and booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on one count of theft. His bond was set at $1,500.
