Posted

Louisiana State Police are investigating an overnight fatal crash on LA Hwy 3043 near National Road in St. Landry Parish.

Troopers say 41-year-old Kelwin K. Cassimere of Opelousas was struck and killed on Tuesday, December 18 around 9:30 pm while standing in the Southbound lane of LA Hwy 3043. Cassimere was driving a 2003 Cadillac CTS northbound on Hwy 3043 when troopers say he stopped his vehicle partially in both lanes and stood in the roadway

Another driver, traveling southbound on LA Hwy 3043, attempted to avoid the vehicle by steering to the right and struck Cassimere as he was standing in the southbound lane.

Cassimere received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Impairment may have been a factor in the crash, but troopers say it is unknown at this time. Toxicology samples were obtained from Cassimere and submitted to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis.

The other driver was uninjured. An investigation is ongoing.
