State Police say Matte was the passenger of a vehicle involved in a crash on LA Hwy 182 near Birdsong Road on Friday.

An investigation into the crash revealed that a 2006 Nissan Altima, driven by 38-year-old Ashley Berza of Lafayette, was being pursued northbound on LA 182 by a Lafayette City Marshal’s vehicle when it crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2014 Ford Escape in which Matte was a passenger.

Troopers say that Matte was not restrained at the time of the crash and received serious injuries. He was transported to Lafayette General Hospital and ultimately succumbed to his injuries on June 3. The 80-year-old driver of the Ford Escape was restrained and received moderate injuries.

State Police say that Berza was properly restrained and received minor injuries. Impairment is unknown at this time, but standard toxicology samples were obtained for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending for Ashley Berza.
