For the third time in recent weeks, ground was broken on a wing for a local school.

Today, the construction began at Katharine Drexel Elementary in Broussard. Principal Denise Soileau said it’s an exciting day for the school.

“Today we broke ground for our new build, it’s a wing of 20 classrooms with student restrooms and faculty restrooms,” she said. “It will replace the portable buildings we have on campus.”

Currently all of the school’s second-graders and third-graders are in portable buildings, along with the music class and some preschoolers, she said.

“Our teachers and our students will have new facilities, and we’re very excited about it,” Soileau said.

A new building means the latest technology and resources, she said.

“The students are so excited that they’re going to get a new building,” she said. “This really is for them.”
