Ossun Elementary’s Million Word Readers got a special treat this afternoon.

The kids who read at least a million words at the school this year got to “slime” their teachers.

Retired Lafayette Parish School System superintendent Dr. Donald Aguillard started the reading initiative several years ago. It aims to recognize students for their independent reading. Any students who reads one million or more words with 85% or better accuracy is recognized as a “Million Word Achiever.”

Word counts are tracked throughout the school year, beginning in June and wrapping up at the end of April.

Students also get certificates and other prizes, and students who read the most words in the district also are recognized.

We’ll have more on this story later today on KATC TV3.
