The Advocate is expanding its team with a number of journalists familiar to Acadiana.

Monday, the paper reported that five new hires had been made, all journalists from The Daily Advertiser in Lafayette.

The Daily Advertiser owned by Gannett Co. is cutting staff and reducing the page counts of its newspapers, according to the paper. As a result, Advocate owner John Georges announced the hiring of Kevin Foote, Claire Taylor, Megan Wyatt, James Bewers and Shari Puterman.

“Acadiana deserves a news organization as dedicated and intelligent and passionate as its people,” said Georges. “We believe that local ownership is the key to the future of media in Louisiana.”

Two local media executives from Louisiana were also hired to the team.

The Advocate has spotlighted each individual new hire. Those can be read here.
