New mixed-use building coming to Downtown Lafayette

Downtown Lafayette will soon be home to a new mixed-use building at the corner of Johnston and Vermilion streets.

Vermilion Lofts will house 24 apartments and retail or office space.

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Stephen Ortego and his team of architects are designing the project. The group bought the former Leather Pouch property to build the complex.

Ortego said having people live downtown will help attract more people to the businesses and restaurants in the area. The building will be four stories, and we’re told the apartments will be upscale.

“What we’re trying to go for is something that feels very urban and very active,” said Ortego. “We’ll have very high ceilings, big windows. We even took a drone to test what the views would look like from the windows looking at the downtown buildings.”

A groundbreaking is scheduled in the coming weeks. At this time, Ortego is not ready to release the price point for the apartments.
