LAFAYETTE, La. – Southern Screen, a nonprofit organization that focuses on storytelling and the entertainment industry in Lafayette, Louisiana, released the full schedule for the upcoming 2018 Southern Screen Festival, which is taking place Wednesday, November 7, through Sunday, November 11. This will be the festival’s eighth year and will include film screenings, workshops and seminars, networking opportunities, parties, and other forms of entertainment.
Visual FX Editor Javier Marcheselli, who has worked on films such as 12 Years Slave, Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049, will be part of a panel discussing the world of film editing, visual fx, and a behind-the-scenes look at film production.
There will be a screening of the popular documentaries On Her Shoulders, about a young a human rights activist nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. And Rodents of Unusual Size, which tells the story about the “giant swamp rats” that are invading coastal Louisiana, and those that defending their communities, culture, and livelihoods from this species.
Kids Filmmaking Workshop, presented by AOC Community Media, is free for kids from the ages 8 to 12. And Teen Animation Workshop, presented by the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE), is free for teens ages 11-15. These workshops will demonstrate fun basic skills to excite your child about the entertainment industry.
Another exciting and noteworthy film, Blaze, will be screening at this year’s festival. Directed by Ethan Hawke, Blaze is a biographical drama depicting the life of the country musician Blaze Foley. This film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Following the screening, actor Ben Dickey, who portrays Blaze Foley in the film, will be performing at the festival wrap party.
“Each year, we strive to bring the entertainment community together here in Lafayette and offer a platform that allows for storytelling through various mediums,” said Julie Bordelon, Executive Director of Southern Screen. “Our festival is an experience that is as unique and inviting as our culture. We are extremely excited to share these experiences with all who attend.”
