LAFAYETTE–The City-Parish Council has approved a zoning change for the old Awards and Trophies property on Johnston Street.

The council voted unanimously to rezone the property from “commercial heavy” to “commercial mixed,” allowing the property’s owner to redevelop the land into an apartment complex. Councilman Pat Lewis twice moved to require the property owner to put 10 parking spots on the land, but he withdrew his amendment both time over concerns that it contradicted the zoning rule requiring only seven spots. The property owner told the council he already plans to put 10 spots if space allows.

The property’s owner is hoping to redevelop that property and put 10 apartment units there. The project is expected to last about a year and will cost an estimated one million dollars.
