In New Iberia, a family is pleading for help after losing their home in a fire.

The fire happened in the 1100 block of Walton Street. The family left home after the power company shut off their electricity, only to find out days later that it caught fire.

“It’s hard seeing your life in front of you like that. I don’t have much but it was mine,” Drucella Bourque said through tears.

Everything she had was destroyed when her house caught fire. Bourque says she and her family learned of the fire when they got a call from the police.

“We lost everything, we have nothing. It’s like starting all over again,” she said.

Not only was her home destroyed in the fire, but Bourque says someone looted the home once the fire was put out.

“They came in and took our icebox, our washer, our stove, our air conditioner,” Bourque explained.

Bourque says she, her pregnant daughter and her nine-month-old granddaughter live on government assistance and now they have nowhere to turn. With Christmas right around the corner, the family just wants help.

“Her (granddaughter) Christmas presents burned up in the house too. Her rocking chair… my kids first everything burned and it was sentimental to me.”

The family says at this point anything will help them get back on their feet.
