A Ville Platte man has been arrested after he allegedly stole a FedEx truck that was parked in front of the police department, Chief Neal Lartigue said.

Kamren Gautreaux, 23, was arrested by state police in connection with the incident.

It began Tuesday morning when a FedEx driver stopped at the department to deliver a package. While he was inside the department, a white man who said he had come to turn himself in to police got into the vehicle, found the keys in the console, and drove away, the chief said.

While law enforcement were looking for the truck in the area, the truck was spotted on I-49 – where it apparently got stuck in the median.

Officers and detectives with the Ville Platte Police Department, along with Deputies of the City Marshal’s Office, the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office, Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office, St. Landry Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police were involved in the search, Lartigue said.

Gautreaux is facing charges of theft, reckless operation, and driving without a license.
