Despite the coronavirus pandemic, thousands of Acadiana residents packed local shopping centers and stores to buy last minute Christmas presents.

Last minute Christmas shoppers were in full swing at the Acadiana Mall. Despite the pandemic they’re making sure to cross off everything on their list and are getting a bit of everything for their families.

“We eat a lot of gumbo and we don't have enough gumbo bowls and plates so they have a real nice selection over here,” said shopper Frank Vacque.

“Some perfumes and some glasses for my family, my sister, my brother-in-law and my dad," said another shopper Bethany Barker.

Some shoppers say when it comes to buying gifts, they work best under pressure.

“Most of the time it’s always last minute but it’s okay," commented Christopher Moffett. "Sometimes I get the best gifts at the last minute."

“Honestly we’re last minute people, we shop to shop last minute but it’s fun. We don't care about the traffic or anything. It’s the holidays, we're trying to enjoy it and be happy,” Barker added.

With tons of shoppers coming in and out of the store many were surprised to see shorter lines.

“The people were very helpful and I thought there would be a lot more crowds but it was a very pleasant experience,” Vacque added.

“Other times it would be more chaotic but this time even though it’s a lot it’s not as much as before,” Barker explained.

For the next crowd of last minute shoppers, Moffett is passing along some advice to stay safe.

“If you’re inside definitely keep your mask on and try to be safe while you’re in there."

For those really last minute shoppers, you have until tomorrow night to buy gifts before Christmas Day. The mall is open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and is closed on Christmas Day.
