Friday, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry launched a music video called “Take Your Pets with You” in conjunction with Pet Preparedness Month and the start of hurricane season in June.

Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., is also urging everyone to Get a Game Plan for their family pet during emergencies.

“History has proven time and again that many people are not ready in the event of a disaster. We have also learned that people will not evacuate their homes because they do not have a place to go with their pets. That is why we continue to provide information to help people prepare,” said Strain.

The LDAF is charged by the Louisiana state legislature to assist with the evacuation and sheltering of pets whose owners need assistance evacuating to a safe place.

The song was written, performed and donated by New Orleans musician Johnette Downing accompanied by trumpeter Kevin Clark of the Dukes of Dixieland, sousaphonist Kirk Joseph of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and percussionist Michael Skinkus.

The video was produced by the LDAF at no additional cost to the state.
