The Current is going non-profit.

The online newspaper will go to a member-supported model and is partnering with AOC community media during its transition.

“We started as a small media company, we’re still a small media company, we’re dedicated to the City of Lafayette and we’ve always had the heart of a non-profit, this is just making it official,” said Christiaan Mader, founder of The Current.

In a post about the move, Mader says that he created The Current in hopes to build something that was both responsive to and reflective of community needs, that delivered information on the basis of what matters and not according to what sells.

The online publication says that their work will continue with “thoughtful, curious” journalism that readers have come to expect from them.
