Man arrested for carjacking in Crowley

A man who police say is in the country illegally was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a carjacking in Crowley

Crowley Police say they responded to the alleged carjacking around 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 29 in the 600 block of East Ash Street.

Police say that on arrival officers discovered the suspect, identified as Evin Jose Yanez-Zavala, sitting inside the carjacking victims vehicle armed with a razor blade. The victim told police that Yanez-Zavala allegedly approached him as he was leaving for work and began waving the razor blade at him. Zavala then allegedly demanded the keys from the victim before the victim was able to escape and return to his residence.

Zavala was placed under arrest when police arrived and transported to the Crowley Police Department.

Police say that while attempting to place Zavala in a holding cell he began to resist and struck an officer in the face. He was quickly subdued, according to police.

Police inquired with Immigration Services regarding Zavala as a part of their investigation into the incident. Police say that immigration services advised them that Zavala was in the United State illegally. Immigration Services placed a detainer on Zavala and he was transported to the Acadia Parish Jail on charges of Attempted Carjacking, Battery on a Police Officer, and Resisting an Officer with Force or Violence.

Zavala is also being held on the detainer.
