Some local children had an early Christmas celebration on Sunday.

“We gave toys to children 2 or 3 years old all the way up to 12 to 13 years old,” said Henry Dixon, who coordinated the event.

Dixon got donations from several stores, and also from the Abbeville Police Department, he said.

“We’re just trying to help the kids have a joyful Christmas,” Dixon said. “Some kids have, and some don’t. These toys were just for the kids.”

Prophetess Latronica Dixon Lewis, who oversees the church, said it was a very special day – and not just for the children.

“That was the best part,” she said of the kids’ excitement. “We didn’t put a jurisdiction on it, we just asked everybody to come and bring their children. It was for anybody and everybody. A lot of them came to our service this morning, and when we had the altar call, to see those children come and cry, and ask God to help them…”

The church family is dedicated to public service, she said.

“We always do things to help the community, and we never sell anything. We don’t get paid for anything,” she said. “We do this for the glory of God.”

The church is located at 706 Nugier Street in Abbeville.
