Information on vehicle, suspects sought in St. Martinville homicide

Investigators with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office are seeking information from the public in reference to the homicide Saturday evening in St. Martinville.

Deputies say that after an investigation, it is believed that the victims who were driving in a four-door black Honda Civic, were traveling from New Iberia to St. Martinville on Hwy. 31, while being followed by a second vehicle.  

Officers say the victim’s vehicle was allegedly shot at several times in the 7300 block of Hwy 31 by an unknown number of occupants in the second vehicle, and the victim’s vehicle came to rest on the opposite shoulder of the highway.  

The shooting happened at around 8:15 p.m. Saturday. A 911 call was received by a passing motorist who reported there were two subjects in a vehicle on the side of the road who appeared to have been shot. Upon arrival, officers reported that one victim, who was later identified as 36-year-old Demarcus Joseph Fontenette of New Iberia was deceased. A  second victim also from New Iberia was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. That person remains in critical condition.
