Acadiana Parish presidents are working together to improve drainage in the region to prevent future flooding.

St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot is part of the Acadiana planning commission.

Fontenot says the state has been getting federal money for flood recovery for years. However, that money has been used for smaller projects. Now, that money will be used to fix flooding on a regional level.

"We want to improve the watershed from the lower levels of elevation to the higher levels. That occurs in every land area. Every land area is impacted by the flows of the watershed. "

The Acadiana planning commission will install water gauges throughout Acadiana to collect data. That data will then be used to draw up flood relief plans.
