The word was stereoscope. In Round 3 of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Crowley native and expert speller Michael Goss correctly spelled the word.

His spelling qualifies him for a chance to compete in the two-part final round of competition on Thursday, May 31. A test taken by competitors before each round of competition will determine if Goss has enough points to move onto the final rounds.

The National Spelling Bee will continue today in Washington, D.C. with the remaining spellers making their way through Round 3 of the competition. The bee can be viewed on ESPN 3.

Goss earned his spot in the third round of competition yesterday after correctly spelling the word ‘oxyacetylene.’ Goss, who is 14 years old, is speller number 199 in the national competition. 516 spellers from across the country began the competition on Tuesday, May 30. That number has since been whittled during the first two rounds of preliminary competitions currently underway.

Round 3 will continue today on ESPN 3. You can also watch on spellingbee.com.

The Final Rounds of competition begin tomorrow and can be viewed on ESPN 2 at 10:00 am and ESPN at 8:30 pm.
