A 27-year-old Broussard man is accused of attempted murder for allegedly attacking a woman in Lafayette on Monday.

Police responded to a report of a stabbing in progress at 4:40 p.m. on May 21, 2018, in the 200 Block of Verot School Road, according to Sergeant Kyle Soriez, spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department. Upon arriving, officers located the victim on scene, suffering from multiple wounds consistent with being cut and stabbed. Officers also located a man on scene matching the description of the suspect that was given by a witness, stated the spokesman. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect, Blake Anthony Meche, was detained and transported to the police department for questioning.

Investigators say during questioning Meche stated he was acting on a sudden homicidal and sexual urge. The incident is believed to be random in nature, as there appears to be no connection between the suspect and victim, according to Sergeant Soriez.

Meche was booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail on one count of attempted second-degree murder.

The victim remains hospitalized.
