The New Acadia Project is being funded again this year thanks to the memory of a former Loreauville Mayor.

A memorial walk for former mayor Al Broussard, in its second year, has raised $17,000 for a project close to Broussard’s family. The New Acadia Project was started by Broussard, who was looking to find the graves of his Acadian ancestors.

Last year, over $28,000 were raised for the New Acadia Project to help researchers begin work along the Teche to find clues relating to the Acadians who once lived there.

Tuesday evening, the check was handed over to the New Acadia Project to begin that work.

Broussard was killed in a car crash three years ago and his family says this project keeps his memory alive. Read more on that story here.
