Opelousas General Health System is hosting its 11th Annual Community Health Fair on Saturday.

The event will be held at OGHS’ South Campus located at 3983 I-49 S. Service Road in Opelousas. It will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

Area health care businesses throughout St. Landry and beyond will be joining OGHS in offering free screenings, tests and other medical information to the community.  Featured screenings include: cholesterol, glucose, iron, lung function, blood pressure, depression, vision, balance, dementia & Alzheimer’s screenings, hearing, sleep disorders, grip strength, cardiovascular, and more. Body mass index readings, nutritional counseling, wellness and other health information. Low-cost screenings will also be available including PSA and A1C for $15.00 each.

At the health fair, you can learn how to perform “Hands Only” CPR, learn the Heimlich maneuver, check your child’s car seat, find out if your child’s immunization records are up to date and view the Air Evac Life Team helicopter.   First aid demonstrations will be available and ear exams will be performed.  Dental education will be provided and tours of our new comprehensive cancer center, Centre de la Vie, will be available throughout the morning.  Both the Louisiana State Fire Marshall and the Opelousas Fire Department will have educational demonstrations on fire safety. The Opelousas Fire Department will also have their smoke house that teaches children what to do in case of a fire in the home. The Opelousas Police Department will also provide prescription drug disposal units.  Prescription drug interaction information will be available and free smoking cessation enrollment will be offered. The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries will be on hand to provide information about life jacket safety.

Visit the Pink Booth to find out if you qualify for a free mammogram and pick up breast health educational material.  Several health professionals will be on site to analyze results and answer questions regarding the screenings.

There will also be a “Kid’s Corner” with activities and educational material for children sponsored by the Youth Leadership Council of the St. Landry Chamber of Commerce.  Door prizes will be given away throughout the morning.
