Officials investigating on-base death of Fort Polk soldier

Officials at Fort Polk says that an investigation is ongoing into the death of a soldier at an on-base residence. 

Officials say that 18-year-old Pvt. Jacob S. Malcolm of Hedgesville, West Virginia died from a gunshot wound on Thursday, April 12. Malcolm served as an infantry rifleman and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. 

Malcolm joined the Army in February 2017 and was assigned to the 10 Mountain Division. He had received several awards including the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

He was pronounced dead by the Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office.

An investigation is being undertaken by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Unit. There were no other details given on the circumstances of Malcolm’s death.
