The Diocese of Lafayette says they're taking precautions against the coronavirus.

"The guidelines are very clear and helpful. And they take into consideration different situations and some things pastors will be able to decide from one to another from one parish to another," says Reverend Herald Trahan.

Reverend Trahan, who occasionally serves at the St. John's Cathedral, will be one of many people affected by the changes, which include a request for all serving at mass to wash their hands.

"I didn't shake hands with people. I thought it would be wiser not to do that. I would just tell them hello. And at the sign of peace I told people to not extend the sign of peace and then explain," says Reverend Trahan.

Reverend Trahan says the guidelines Bishop Deshotel with the Diocese of Lafayette has given should help each pastor.

"It's on the pastor's hands and if for that particular pastor to determine in his parish the best way to approach this," says Reverend Trahan.

Reverend Trahan believes St. John's Cathedral will start as early as this weekend with precautions.
