A family of 7 was displaced and a home damaged after a fire in Lafayette Saturday afternoon.

According to spokesman, Lafayette firefighters responded to an emergency call of a vehicle on fire in the 600 block of North Washington Street just after 4:30 p.m. Firefighters found the vehicle under a carport and engulfed in flames, the heat from which ignited the carport and interior of the home. The fire was brought under control within ten minutes, but the vehicle and the home sustained heavy fire damage.

The home was occupied by a family of seven - three adults and four children. All were safety able to get out of the home. Investigators discovered that the owner of the vehicle had gone to the store and about 10 minutes after returning, one of the children sitting outside noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment of the car. They alerted their mother and got everyone safely out of the home. The family lost everything in the fire. The American Red Cross was notified to offer assistance to the family.

A firefighter extinguishing the flames sustained a minor leg injury. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and is expected to be okay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
