While two weeks before the official beginning of hurricane season, the first tropical depression of the season formed Saturday afternoon off of the east coast of Florida.

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting this system to become a tropical storm while paralleling the East Coast of the U.S.

A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for portions of the North Carolina Coast.

If and when the system becomes a storm, it will be assigned the name "Arthur".

The system poses no threat to the Gulf of Mexico.

Early season storms do not necessarily portend a busy season ahead.

This is the 7th season in a row, where a tropical or sub-tropical system has been identified before the official beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season which starts June 1st.
