Funeral services for Vermilion Parish volunteer firefighter announced

VERMILION PARISH, La. — Robert Hughes was a volunteer firefighter with the Meaux/Nunez Volunteer Fire Department.

The department shared this post, remembering Hughes and what he meant to the community:

The Louisiana State Firemen's Association also shared the details for Hughes' funeral services, which will take place Thursday.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Our Saviors Church in Abbeville. The procession will go from Our Saviors Church to Cypress Funeral Home in Maurice.

If any department would like to have a truck in the procession, they ask that you be at Our Saviors Church at 9 a.m. for line up.

A volunteer firefighter was responding to an emergency Friday afternoon, when he crashed and was thrown from his vehicle, later dying from his injuries.

Robert Hughes, 49, of Kaplan was driving in Louisiana Highway 14 near West Pirates Lane. For reasons still unknown, he left the road while in a curve and drove into a ditch. Hughes was not wearing a seat belt at the time and was thrown from the vehicle, leaving him with serious injuries. He was taken to nearby hospital, where he later died.

The passenger in the vehicle with Hughes was also unrestrained and thrown from the vehicle. He was left with serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated.

The crash is still under investigation.
