On day 3 of the 2018 NFL Draft the New England Patriots selected LSU quarterback Danny Etling with the first pick in the seventh round.

Etling now joins Tom Brady who will turn 41 in August and backup Brian Hoyer as the Patriots third quarterback.

Etling began his college career at Purdue, but was benched after the first five games of his sophomore season. After transferring to LSU Etling played two seasons for the Tigers at quarterback. In his senior year he completed 60 percent of his throws, and threw for 2,463 yards, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions.

The 6-foot-3, 222 pound quarterback was always projected to be a late round draft pick or to not be drafted at all.

With Etling’s selection, LSU has now had six players taken in this year’s NFL Draft. Earlier in the day the Atlanta Falcons selected Tigers wide receiver Russell Gage with the 194th overall pick.
